Fre Non Alcoholic Rose [Review]

Today we’re reviewing another Fre Non Alcoholic Wine! Just to recap, Fre is a brand of Non Alcoholic wines created by the same producers as Sutter Home wines. It’s meant to be made in a similar quality to their traditional wines, and is widely available at local grocery stores due to their distribution network. We already tried the Fre Sparkling Brut, which received a 2-sip rating, which wasn’t bad – but didn’t impress us. This review is dedicated to the beautifully pink-hued Fre Non Alcoholic Rose.

Will this non-alcoholic Rose taste like its traditional counterpart, or more like a light kombucha? Check out our review to find out! TLDR? Skip to the rating.

About Fre Non Alcoholic Wines

What we love most about Fre wines is that they’re made right here in America. Although technically they’re on the other side of the country from the East coast, we still consider them a local. Supporting American farmers and in this case, wineries are important to us. We also appreciate that these unwines are actually dealcoholized from traditional wines. Fre takes their non-alcoholic wine making process a step further by refining their traditional wines to make a beverage more people can enjoy.

Creating our alcohol-removed wine isn’t much different from making traditional wine—at least initially. We select grapes from premier California vineyards, carefully choosing sites that beautifully express the characteristics of each grape variety.  Following harvest, our winemakers craft each wine using traditional methods, achieving rich flavor, alluring texture and excellent balance.

Wine Dealcoholization process

Fre uses the latest dealcoholization technology to remove the alcohol from their wines. The spinning cone process lightly removes the aroma, alcohol, and leaves the dealcoholized wine.

Fre alcohol-removed Rosé is produced using the revolutionary spinning cone column. The spinning cone facilitates the removal and safe-guarding of fragile wine aromas and flavors at low temperatures, then removes the alcohol at slightly higher temperatures. The wine essences are then reintroduced to the dealcoholized base wine and blended with un-fermented grape juice. The finished product is a fresh, delicious beverage with the characteristic aromas and flavors of premium wine. Fre has less than 0.5% alcohol by volume and half the calories of regular wine.

Using the latest technology allows Fre to create wines that taste true to their alcoholic counterparts. This process can be expensive, which might explain the pricing of the non alcoholic wines. The alcoholic Sutter homes wines cost around $5-7 where the Fre wines start at $8 / bottle.

Fre Rose First impressions

Just like the other Fre Wines, the label for this wine was very simple and clean. The bottle was sealed with a screw top instead of a cork, which was expected at this price range. The white label sits on a clear glass bottle that shows off the light pink hue of the non alcoholic wine. They proudly announce that they are from “California Vineyards”.  Additionally, it’s also made clear on the label that it’s an “alcohol-removed wine”.

What does Fre Non Alcoholic Rose Taste Like?

The Rose itself was very mild. The aroma of the wine was similar to what you’d expect from a Rose, and there wasn’t a strong alcohol or fermented smell. On the first sip, you get a very light kombucha-like, sour taste that dissipates quickly. The sour notes are not too strong, and difficult to notice unless you’re looking for them. This would be great on a summer day, served cold over ice.

Fre alcohol-removed Rosé is a delicate, pink-hued wine, with lively strawberry and citrus flavors. The palate is crisp and fruity, with ripe berry accents and a beautiful, refreshing finish.

Fre Rose Rating and Review

This non-alcoholic rose also gets a 3-Sip rating from us. It’s good, and I would have it again simply because it’s easy to find on local shelves. If I need a non alcoholic wine in a pinch, I’ll definitely reach for the Fre non Alcoholic Rose. It doesn’t taste spectacularly good or bad. Just an overall solid choice for anyone looking for an non-alcoholic alternative!

If some of these ingredients sound scary, most of them are added to preserve the shelf life of the non alcoholic wine. Due to the lack of alcohol to preserve the wine, they add a few chemicals to ensure it lasts a bit longer at the store. However, these ingredients do not need to be disclosed on alcoholic wines. So, they may actually be present in traditional wines – just not listed on the label.

Food Pairings: Pair this wine with grilled fish or summer salads.
